Vardø is the only town in Norway located in the Arctic. With weather from all directions and colourful houses, it’s a place where you can explore a rich history and enjoy world‑class birdwatching.
Vardø is Norway’s easternmost town – an island on the edge of the Barents Sea and the northern end of the European route E75. The town offers mysterious stories, remarkable wildlife and nature unlike anywhere else in the country.
In the town centre, you’ll find the memorial marking the Finnmark witch trials, and nearby lies Vardøhus Fortress, with origins dating back to the 14th century. The fortress is still in use today and hosts exhibitions, concerts and festivals – as well as the town’s only tree, a rowan tree carefully wrapped and protected every winter.
Vardø is also a haven for nature photographers and anyone who enjoys the Norwegian outdoors. Tens of thousands of seabirds fill the skies over land and sea. Just outside the town lies Hornøya, one of Norway’s most important seabird cliffs. Thousands of seabirds nest here every year, and it is the only place in mainland Norway where you can see the thick-billed murre.
