Brønnøysund
Whilst in Brønnøysund our cabin crew recommends different active ways of getting to Torghatten. Torghatten is a mountain known for its characteristic hole through its center. According to legend the hole was made by the troll Hestmannen while chasing the beautiful girl Lekamøya. The troll realised he would not get the girl and released an arrow to kill her. The troll-king of Sømna threw his hat into the arrow's path to save her, and the hat turned into the mountain with a hole in the middle.
The tunnel, with a length of 160 m, width of 35 m, and height of 20 m, was in reality formed during the Scandinavian ice age. Ice and water eroded the looser rocks, while the harder ones in the mountain top resisting erosion.
One of our captains recommend getting out your rollerblades, sneakers and a small backpack with something to eat and drink. From Brønnøysund center it's a great trip out to Torghatten on rollerblades. It's flat and very little traffic. Get your sneakers on and walk through Torghatten. Enjoy the views whilst eating your lunch and get your rollerblades back on and blade back into town. What a joy!
Another of our cabin crew recommends experiencing Torghatten at midnight on bike during spring/summertime. Ride your bike (alternatively you can rent one at Thon Hotel) out to Torghatten in the middle of the night, make a stop or two on the way to greet the cows in the fields. You might even see a elk in between the trees. A rare and special experience to get this close to wild animals. It's so quiet and tranquil at night, and not to worry about the sight as the midnight sun keeps the skies bright.
Leave your bike by the road and walk into a small quiet water, or walk up to Torghatten and have a little midnight-snack enjoying the view in peace. This is a wonderful and slightly different way of experiencign a well-known attraction.
After all these activities you might feel for some food and sweets; A trip to Hurtigrutekaia is recommended - they have the worlds best "soft-ice" - soft icecream stirred with strawberries - yammi! If you are hungry for some food - take the trip to Urteariumet where you can dig into a fantastic herb-pizza.
